Viraj is a Kenyan American focused on addressing environmental problems with multisector solutions. Viraj grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, in a multigenerational environmentalist household and came to the U.S. to earn a degree in environmental studies at Brown University. He has since co-founded Kulisha, a startup that raised $250,000 to create a sustainable protein from food waste, and worked for several years at Optoro, a technology company that is building circularity in e-commerce by using machine learning to keep returned inventory out of landfills. Viraj is currently working on a new project that leverages remote-sensing technology to create scalable, community-based carbon and biodiversity credits based on the reestablishment of native vegetation and wildlife. This will enable frontline communities to participate in global environmental markets and benefit economically from the environmental stewardship and sequestration services they provide for the planet.
