Katie believes that the future of work includes more folks of all backgrounds, including those who have formerly been incarcerated. While serving as a public middle school Teach For America teacher, Katie witnessed incarceration deeply impact some of her students’ families. After four years of teaching in the South Bronx, New York, she moved cross-country to teach coding and web development to incarcerated women in a remote California prison. Since then, Katie has become an advocate for fair chance hiring— the hiring of formerly incarcerated people. Most recently, Katie worked with Next Chapter, an organization that provides formerly incarcerated individuals with software engineering apprenticeships at top tech companies. Katie holds bachelor’s degrees in urban studies and sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in teaching from Fordham University.
