Field Experience Trip to the United Arab Emirates on Government Innovation & Public Policy

The Center for Public Leadership (CPL) and the Middle East Initiative (MEI) of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs launched the Emirates Leadership Initiative, the goal of which is to: provide advanced training in management and leadership development to emerging leaders from the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East; engage in research of importance to the region; and enrich the intellectual community at HKS and beyond.
The Emirates Leadership Initiative is hosting an intensive field visit to the United Arab Emirates from January 13 – 21, 2018 for several Harvard Kennedy School students. This trip is fully and generously funded by the Emirates Leadership Initiative. This year's theme of the field visit to the UAE, which ranked first among Arab countries and 41st worldwide in the Global Innovation Index, will be Government Innovation and Public Policy. HKS students with demonstrated experience in innovation within the government, NGO, or private sectors are eligible to apply. The itinerary will include meeting with the UAE’s Prime Minister’s Office, Smart Government initiative, and other high-profile government officials, in addition to exploring the UAE’s many innovative endeavors, such as the use of drones to improve government services and the first round-the-world flight powered by solar energy. The field experience trip will also include academic discussions, engagement with local HKS alumni, cultural visits, and sightseeing.
What does the trip entail?
This field visit will take place from Saturday, January 13 through Sunday, January 21, with meetings, sightseeing and cultural events running throughout the days and evenings on Monday, January 14 – Saturday, January 20.
Who is eligible to participate in this trip?
Any current HKS degree program student may apply to participate. You must be in attendance at HKS for the full 2017-2018 academic year as a full-time student. Domestic and international students are welcome to apply. If participation will mean missing classes, students are responsible for securing permission from their instructors to miss class before applying to participate.

The deadline is 12:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday October 11, 2017. Your application should be a single document in Microsoft Word or PDF form, with your materials in the following order: 1) resume or CV, and 2) personal statement. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Selected students will be notified in early November, 2017.
