Please join the Center for Public Leadership, Women and Public Policy Program, and the India Caucus for a discussion on breaking gender barriers and dynasty politics in parliamentary democracies with Smriti Irani, Indian Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development, and Textiles.
Ms. Irani's transition from a popular TV star to a Union Cabinet Minister is a fascinating narrative. This conversation will trace her political journey from a popular TV star to a Union Cabinet Minister and also investigate the challenges and opportunities that exist in India for candidates without any political legacy. Further, it will explore how women’s participation in politics can advance gender-based diversity in the field and counter patriarchal decision-making structures. Given the landscape of the challenges that exist, the speakers will also deliberate on the potential policy solutions that exist in India and beyond to launch women into political leadership and provide them enabling platforms and institutional support to sustain in those roles.
This conversation will be moderated by Prof. Janina Matuszeski, HKS Lecturer in Public Policy, and will be followed by a question and answer session.
This event is open to HKS students, faculty, and staff. The session will be recorded, and may be posted to YouTube and/or CPL's social media channels. Attendees must register for this event using the registration link above.
