COVID-19 Response Summer Internship Program

During this pandemic state and local governments are under siege, nonprofits are confronting historical and structural inequities, and Harvard is engaging in vital research to blunt detrimental effects on the economy, health and education systems, and more. In alignment with its mission to develop principled, effective public leaders, CPL is meeting these needs by connecting HKS students with real-time, meaningful work that supports local COVID-19 response efforts.

The CPL COVID-19 Response Summer Internship Program—part of Harvard Kennedy School’s system of projects addressing the current pandemic—provides HKS students with financially supported summer internships, during which students participate in a cross-program cohort that combines:

  • Remote project support for local governments and nonprofit organizations on the frontlines of the crisis

  • Remote research projects focused on questions and needs raised by the pandemic

  • Weekly virtual cohort meetings designed to exchange ideas, examine leadership lessons, foster community, and enhance the collective impact of students’ work.

The application deadline for this program was May 20, 2020. Successful candidates will be informed of placement no later than May 29, 2020.

Positions included:

  • Internships with state and local governments and community organizations, in collaboration with the Taubman Center and Ash Center

  • Internships with U.S. and international nonprofits, facilitated by CPL's Social Innovation + Change Initiative

  • Research Assistant positions with CPL's Initiative for Responsible Investment, Trotter Collaborative for Social Justice, and more

Interns receive a summer stipend payment of $5000 for eight weeks of full-time work (35 hours/week). Research assistants receive $18/hr for eight weeks of full-time work (32 hours/week). Students are permitted to pursue additional funds and employment over the course of the summer.

COVID-19 Summer Internship Program

Successful candidates commit to joining the CPL COVID-19 Response Summer Internship cohort, which will meet virtually once a week from June 1, 2020 to July 24, 2020, and will include:

  • Cohort meetings with faculty to focus on one facet of the cohort’s COVID response efforts. Students can ask questions of faculty and will be given time in small teams to reflect on lessons learned.
